POR 440 Portuguese for Speakers of Other Romance Languages (4)

From Brazil to Portugal to Mozambique to Goa, India, over 200 million people worldwide are native Portuguese speakers. Brazil alone is now the world's eighth largest economy, and the world's single largest agricultural exporter. Yet Portuguese is still one of the lesser-taught languages in the U.S.

This course is tailored to advanced (senior-level) students nearing completion of their studies in Spanish, French, or Italian, who want an introduction to Portuguese language and Lusophone (i.e., Portuguese-speaking) cultures. Because of the similarity of Portuguese to other Romance languages, students of Spanish, French, or Italian may learn Portuguese relatively quickly in comparison to those learning their first foreign language. These students may take Portuguese courses at an intensive pace. POR 440 will incorporate web-based research on Lusophone cultures.

This course is for advanced speakers of Romance languages. Lower-level students should not enroll. For Spanish majors, POR 440 will count as an advanced Spanish course toward the major. LEC
