How to Apply

Applications should be filed by January 15. The Graduate Record Examination is required of all applicants from within the United States; the TOEFL is required of international students, unless they have previously studied at a university in the United States. Applicants (both domestic and foreign) must send original transcripts or notarized copies. "Original" means that the transcript which you mail to us must have the raised seal of the institution on it, or an ink signature by an officer of the institution. Photocopies of original or notarized documents are not acceptable. Foreign transcripts must have original translations or notarized copies. International Admissions will not accept any copies and admission will not be considered.

A completed application includes:

  • GRADMIT online application form (do not forget to write a personal statement!)
  • Original transcripts from previous institutions
  • Original GRE or TOEFL scores

    Use the appropriate codes!

    • For the TOEFL: Institution code: 2925
    • Department codes: French: 16; Spanish: 23
    • For the GRE: Institution code: R2925
    • Department codes: French: 2603; Spanish: 2608
  • Writing sample (undergraduate or graduate term paper)
  • $50 non-refundable application fee. The application fee may now be paid on the on-line application. This is done at the end of the application, electronically with your credit card. If you prefer to send a check or money order, please make check payable to: SUNY at Buffalo. We cannot accept Western Union transfers.
  • Three letters of recommendation. References may be mailed or faxed to us. They do not need to be on a specialized form; letterhead will suffice.
