Fellowships
Institutional fellowships and assistantships are available to outstanding applicants planning study leading to the Ph.D. Candidates are nominated by the Department to compete for Presidential Fellowships which carry offers of $12,400 to $16,400 per year plus a tuition scholarship. In addition, there are Dean's Scholarships which offer $12,400 per year plus a tuition scholarship. Outstanding candidates who are members of under-represented minority groups may also be nominated for the Arthur A. Schomburg Fellowships. Departmental teaching fellowships carry a stipend of $10,400 per academic year plus a tuition scholarship. Preference for enhanced fellowships is given to US citizens and/or residents of New York State. Fellows and assistants teach one language course per semester. Some summer teaching stipends are available. Terms: M.A candidates are eligible for a maximum of four semesters of support. Ph.D. candidates are eligible for a maximum of eight semesters of support, which can include a one-year grant for study abroad.
